Value of 1923 St. Gaudens $20 Gold

Locating an overall sharply struck and lustrous 1923 St. Gaudens double eagle should prove relatively easy for the coins were produced to a high standard of quality. Although lower end Uncirculated coins are quite heavily abraded, in keeping with the standards of their respective grade level, the 1923 has a generous population in higher grades that includes many minimally abraded and overall smooth-looking examples.
Widely exported at the time of issue and well represented in later repatriations from overseas hoards, the 1923 is much more plentiful than the relatively low mintage might imply. Indeed, this is a common date in Uncirculated condition, especially in MS-60 to MS-64. Gems in MS-65 are moderately scarce, yet still readily obtainable. Very rare any finer, a small number of grading events in MS-66 on the PCGS Population Report are the finest certified.
