ANA – American Numismatic Association
Founded in Chicago in November 1891 by Dr. George F. Heath and others, the ANA has grown to be the world’s largest organization devoted to the hobby and pastime, the art and science of coins, tokens, medals, and paper money.
In the mid-1960s the ANA established its Home and Headquarters on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Ever since then it has been a focal point for research, education, and other programs. The Library has thousands of items that can be borrowed by mail. The Summer Seminar held in two one-week sessions each summer offers hands-on courses for everything from coin grading to attributing die varieties, to becoming immersed in various specialties.
Each month The Numismatist, under the editorship of Barbara Gregory, includes articles of interest to beginners and old-timers alike—something for everyone. Dave Bowers is a regular columnist with something different in each issue. Conventions are held each year with the World’s Fair of Money, or summer show, being the most important. Held in Chicago in 2013, 2014, and 2015, they will be in Anaheim in 2016 and Philadelphia in 2017. It has been our privilege to hold official auctions with these conventions, the first one for us being back in 1939 in New York City. Many attendees also went to the World’s Fair that year.
At the Headquarters in Colorado Springs the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Gallery offers displays of early gold coins 1795-1834, as often cited in our D. Brent Pogue Collection descriptions. Patterns and other treasures are on view as well. We worked with the Bass family in arranging this, creating exhibits that have created wide attention ever since.
