History, Information, and Value of 1874-CC Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1874-CC $20 Double Eagle

The 1874-CC double eagle is not quite as well struck as the 1872-CC or 1873-CC and will tend to show softness of detail at the high points of Liberty’s portrait, one or more of the obverse stars, the center of the reverse shield, and along the outer edges of the eagle’s wings. Surfaces tend to be moderately to heavily abraded, and most survivors no longer display any of the original luster due to wear and/or impairments. A few high grade examples are known, however, and their finish is either satiny or modestly semi-prooflike. Scarce in an absolute sense when compared to San Francisco coins, the 1874-CC is actually one of the most readily obtainable Carson City Mint double eagles in circulated grades through AU-53. Choice AU examples are fairly elusive, however, while in Mint State it is very rare. The finest certified examples have been graded MS-62 by PCGS and NGC.
