History, Information, and Value of 1874-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1874-S $20 Double Eagle

The 1874-S double eagle has a below average strike for a Type 2 Liberty Head double eagle. The obverse is often more or less soft over the high points of the portrait and the surrounding stars. As well, the center of the shield on the reverse is usually incomplete. The typical example is noticeably abraded, although in high grades strong frosty or satiny luster can be quite attractive. This is a plentiful issue in circulated grades, especially VF and EF, although enough AU examples remain that locating one should also prove to be fairly easy. With several hundred coins extant the 1874-S is one of the more readily obtainable Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles in MS-60 and MS-61 grades. In MS-62 this issue is very scarce, and it is all but unobtainable any finer. The finest certified examples are graded MS-63.
