History, Information, and Value of 1875 Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1875 $20 Double Eagle
A typically well struck issue, most 1875 double eagles display bold to sharp detail on both sides. High grade examples are often quite vibrantly lustrous with a frosty or, less frequently, satin texture. Although generally offered with moderately to heavily abraded surfaces, patience will be rewarded with a relatively smooth-looking example. The 1875 is readily obtainable in all grades from well worn through MS-62; this is one of the most common Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles in an absolute sense. Scarce in MS-63, this issue is rare in higher grades and unknown above MS-64. The 1875 is the rarest Proof Liberty Head double eagle of this type, and it is unlikely that more than eight or nine coins have survived.
