History, Information, and Value of 1874 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1874 $20 Double Eagle

This well produced issue typically comes with an overall bold, if not sharp strike and, in high grades, excellent luster in a vibrant satin or frosty texture. As with all Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles, it is difficult to find an example of the 1874 double eagle without heavily abraded surfaces. Although generally obtainable in circulated grades, the 1874 is underrated compared to the truly common date Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles such as the 1873 Open 3, 1875-S and 1876-S. Mint State survivors are even more underrated, although persistent collectors can usually obtain an MS-60 or MS-61. In MS-62 the 1874 is very scarce, while in Choice Uncirculated it is rare. The finest known examples have been certified MS-64 by PCGS. The 1874 double eagle is a major rarity in Proof format with fewer than 10 coins accounted for.
