History, Information, and Value of 1892-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1892-S $20 Double Eagle
While most 1892-S double eagles are boldly to sharply struck, a few pieces are known with minor softness of detail to the high points of Libertys portrait and/or a few of the surrounding stars. Mint State coins are usually highly lustrous, often in a satin or frosty texture, but occasionally semi-prooflike. Scattered abrasions are the norm with many examples quite heavily marked. One of the more frequently encountered double eagles from the 1890s, the 1892-S is readily obtainable in circulated grades as well as in the MS-60 to MS-63 range. Near-Gems in MS-64 are moderately scarce, yet relatively easy to acquire, but in MS-65 and higher grades this issue remains rare. Finest certified honors belong to a solitary NGC MS-66.
