History, Information, and Value of 1893 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1893 $20 Double Eagle

Most extant 1893 double eagles are sharply struck and lustrous, especially Mint State coins. The typical example is liberally abraded and, in fact, the 1893 is one of the more challenging issues from this decade to locate with relatively smooth surfaces. All Philadelphia Mint double eagles from the 1893 through the end of the 19th century are readily obtainable in both circulated and lower Mint State grades. Even MS-64s are only moderately scarce, although in Gem Mint State this is a conditionally rare issue. An MS-67 listed at NGC is the finest certified by two full points, the second finest an MS-65 at the same service. As the smaller mintage might imply, the Proof 1893 is even rarer than the Proof 1892 with no more than 15 or 20 coins accounted for.
