This 1909 Indian Gold Eagle is an invariably sharp eagle that is also known for excellent mint luster in a vibrant satin texture. The typical survivor is moderately to heavily abraded from commercial use.
While readily obtainable in circulated grades, the 1909 is one of the scarcer Philadelphia Mint Indian eagles in Mint State. Most examples in the latter category are confined to the MS-60 to MS-63 range; coins graded MS-64 are scarce and anything finer is rare. The finest certified is a phenomenal MS-67+ graded by PCGS. Only 50 to 60 Proof 1909 eagles are believed extant, most of which are of the satin type. Two Sand Blast Proofs are known, one of which appeared in Stack’s May 1970 sale of the Gaston DiBello Collection.
