The reverse text is Centennial Celebration Discovery of Gold in California 1848-1948. The front side of the coin shows a female sitting with a staff and a Roman helmet and shield in the foreground, a bear is above her head and the ocean is in the background with four visible ships in the water, a miner works near her feet in the fields.
