The obverse text on this So-Called Dollar reads These United colonies are and of right ought to be, free and independent states, 1776 and the reverse text is By authority of the Congress of the United States in Commemoration of the Hundredth anniversary of American Independence 1876. The front side of the coin shows a kneeling female figure in the center with her left hand lifted towards the stars and rays at the top of the coin, and with her right hand holding a sword on the ground, surrounded by circular oriented text. The backside of the coin depicts a wreath of leaves surrounding 8 lines of text in the center with single circular lines of text surrounding the wreath.
