One of the most poorly produced issues in the Indian half eagle series, the 1912-S Indian Half Eagle is characterized by softness of detail to the lowermost feathers in the Native American’s headdress, die deterioration around the borders on one or both sides, and an amorphous S mintmark that is often little more than a blob of metal. Luster quality is also inferior with the typical Mint State coin subdued and granular in texture. With moderately to heavily abraded surfaces also common, locating a superior 1912-S with overall smooth surfaces and strong eye appeal is extremely challenging.

This San Francisco Mint issue is somewhat scarce in circulated grades with worn survivors carrying a small premium due to the elusiveness of Uncirculated examples. The 1912-S is rare even in the lowest Mint State grades, and it is seldom offered any finer than MS-62. Only a couple of Gems in MS-65 are known. The 1912-S vies with the 1914-S as the rarest Indian half eagle in the finest Mint State grades.
