History, Information, and Value of 1914-S Indian Gold Eagle

Value of 1914-S Indian Head $10 Gold

One of the better-produced San Francisco Mint Indian eagles, the 1914-S Indian Gold Eagle is usually encountered with sharp striking detail and a richly frosted texture. On the other hand, most survivors exhibit numerous detracting marks from time spent in commercial channels.
Often overshadowed by the more highly touted key date Indian eagles such as the 1911-D and 1913-S, the 1914-S is an underrated issue that is elusive in its own right. Circulated examples are scarce by the standards of this type, while coins are very scarce in the MS-60 to MS-63 grade range. Rare in MS-64 and very rare as a Gem, unique MS-67 and MS-66 entries at NGC and PCGS, respectively, represent the finest certified for this issue. The PCGS MS-66 appeared at auction in American Numismatic Rarities’ sale of June 2006.

The text on the Indian Gold Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date. | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; TEN DOLLARS.
