The Mecklenburg Centennial medal commemorates the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence which was signed in 1775. Ironically enough, the document this medal honors, may not have even existed, and if it did exist, it was denounced as unlawful by leaders. The obverse displays a beehive, a tree-branch, a liberty cap, and the years 1774 and 1875. Behind the items are rays of light. The reverse lacks an image but reads, “MECKLENBURG DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE 20 MAY 1775.” According to records, 1,000 bronze medals were struck from cent metal and not bronzed because of a time constraint.
