Although striking quality varies for this issue, enough coins are extant that locating a piece with overall bold, if not sharp definition should prove to be easy. High grade examples are lustrous, usually satiny or frosty in finish, with the typical survivor liberally abraded regardless of specific grade. Common in worn condition up through Choice Uncirculated, the 1896-S double eagle does not become rare until the MS-65 grade level. Very few Gems are known, although PCGS has certified a MS-67 that ranks as the finest certified for the issue.
