History, Information, and Value of 1720 John Law Medal

Value of 1720 John Law Medal

Obverse of this medal depicts a John Law, the devious scoundrel who tricked many Frenchmen into nefarious schemes and thereby cheated them out of money. The figure of Law is shouting, “By skill all things are gained.” He is wearing a fine costume and tri-corn hat. Reverse displays a woman in mourning, her head in her hands, sitting by a table. The woman is possibly interpreted as France. The legend states, “By bad luck all things are lost.” This piece is not dated, but it assumed to be struck in 1720. Additionally, there is no artist’s signature.
