The John Tyler Indian Peace Medal displays a bust of Tyler on the front. For the first time, all three medals were identical because of process used in the creation of the medals. The obverse design was created by Ferdinand Pettrick. Around the bust of Tyler the legend reads, “JOHN TYLER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1841.” The reverse displays two hands shaking below a peace pipe and tomahawk. The legend reads, “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.” The reverse design was a popular one on medals struck between 1809-1849. This is the largest of the Tyler medals sixty of these medals were struck, although an unknown number were melted down during the Presidency of James Polk.
