This medal celebrates the 100th anniversary of American Independence. Obverse depicts a bust of Washington, facing to the right. The name Barber is displayed below the truncation. Reverse depictions a closed wreath, within is written, “1776 Annual Assay 1876”. The legend reads, “Year one hundred of American Independence”. The reverse design was originally intended for the Trade dollars, but since an altering of the dollars would require an act of Congress, the idea was shot down. Instead this popular medal was created and collected and valued by many.
