These medals commemorated the Centennial anniversary of the battle of Valley Forge. The obverse displays an image of George Washington facing to the right. The legend around the outer circle reads, “GEORGE WASHINGTON COMMANDER IN CHIEF; BARBER.” The reverse displays a wreath in the center surrounded by the legend which reads, “VALLEY FORGE CENTENNIAL 1778-1878; IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DEPARTURE OF THE CONTINENTAL ARMY JUNE 19.” Only 1 gold medal was struck while 22 silver were struck. In 1878 400 bronze medals were struck although more medals would be struck in the following years.
