This medal honors former President Ulysses S. Grant. The medals were handed out during a parade and were never offered for sale by the Mint. While exact figures are unknown, experts estimate that there were 10,000 pieces struck. The obverse features a bust of Grant, facing to the left. The legend reads, “ULYSSES S. GRANT; M.” The reverse displays the arms of the City of Philadelphia. The legend around the arms reads, “STRUCK AND DISTRIBUTED IN THE MUNICIPAL PARADE BY THE EMPLOYES OF THE U.S. MINT. PHILA. DEC. 16. 1879.”
