The obverse text on this So-Called Dollar reads To commemorate the first centennial of the City of Middletown, 1784 July 13 1884, Jabez Hamlin, First Mayor and the reverse text is The Seal of the City of Middletown Connecticut. The front side of the coin shows the bust of a man, Jabez Hamlin, in the center facing the right side of the coin, a wreath circling his bust with two total lines of text circling around the coin, a beaded border to the outside edge. The backside of the coin depicts the City Seal of Middletown in the center, with a horse and buggy in the foreground and the sun rising over the mountains in the background, text surrounding in a single line.
