The front side of the coin shows a ship in the center with two drawn flags above the ships crossing, a banner below the boat with text above and below. The backside of the coin depicts the state seal of the state of California, with a woman holding a spear in her right hand, a bear below with her hand resting on the shield, mountains and rays of sun in the background.
