History, Information, and Value of 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar

Value of 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar

Flowing Hair half dollars saw an increased mintage this year, and therefore there are a corresponding greater number of coins available to collectors. Thirty-one die pairs are known for the 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar issue, a couple of which are considered rare. The scarcity of the type as a whole keeps any of them from being listed as common. Once again, the “small” or “truncated head” obverse was used. This year saw enough coins struck that examples can be secured without too much trouble. Another variation this year concerned the number of leaves in the wreath under the eagle’s feathers. On most coins, there were two leaves under each wing, but one reverse die had three leaves under each wing. Fortunately, the variety is not too scarce and collectors can obtain one, though these typically sell for around twice what a two-leaf example sells for. As with the 1794 issue, striking issues abound, and planchet filing marks, weak rims, and softly struck devices should be considered par for the course. Once again, patience and careful selection is advised and will be rewarded in the long run.

Availability: Perhaps as many as 90 Mint State examples exist across all varieties, but they are offered infrequently. Upper EF and AU examples are elusive in relation to the population as a whole but are not considered rare. Lower circulated grades from VG to VF are the norm, and collectors should be able to find an appealing example without significant problems.
