Value of 1828 C-1 Classic Head Half Cent

W-1 | 13 Stars | C-1, B-1 | Breen dies: 1-A. | This available variety is represented by some 1,000 to 1,500 pieces today. Star 13 on the obverse points between two dentils. The reverse is recognized by the berry under the upright of the T in UNITED and the tip of the highest leaf which is below the final S in STATES; this same die was used for 1826 W-2 as the 1828 Classic Head Half Cent, W-1. Mint State examples exist and are typically brown. This coin was minted at the Old Philadelphia Mint.

Value of 1828 C-2 Classic Head Half Cent

W-3 | 12 Stars | C-2, B-3 | Breen dies: 3-C. | One of the most famous die varieties of the era is the 1828 Classic Head Half Cent, W-3. Enough are known, mainly in grades from VF to low Mint State ranges, that a nice example is easily enough found. Related star-count errors include the 1817 15-stars cent and the 1832 12-stars half eagle. Today’s estimated population of the famous 12-star variety is 3,000 to 4,000 pieces, chiefly AG to AU, with some brown Mint State coins known. In the late 1980s we purchased a hoard containing several hundred examples of 1828 12-star half cents ranging from AG to AU. We offered these coins individually in the pages of the Rare Coin Review where they sold like the proverbial hotcakes.

Value of 1828 C-3 Classic Head Half Cent

W-2 | 13 Stars | C-3, B-2 | Breen dies: 2-B. | This is the most plentiful variety of the year with an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 or so pieces available to today’s collectors. On this obverse star 13 points directly at a dentil. The reverse has a berry under the lower left serif of the E in UNITED and the tip of the highest leaf extends past the final S in STATES. As should be expected, Mint State examples of the 1828 Classic Head Half Cent, W-2 are no stranger to the hobby and are often found with traces of original color.

The text on the obverse of the coin reads “Liberty, 1828” and the reverse text on the Classic Head Half Cent reads “United States of America, Half Cent.” The obverse of the coin shows a womans bust facing the left with 13 stars surrounding her head and the date below.
