Guidelines for Collecting: The 1837 Reeded Edge half dollar mintage was substantial, and examples are easily obtainable today. Most collectors seeking an example of the type with the denomination expressed as 50 CENTS choose this date, as the 1836 is harder to locate and much more expensive. Strike can be quite strong, but examples are also found with soft details, in particular on the obverse stars, eagle’s feathers on the reverse, and the dentils. Twenty-six obverse and reverse die pairs are known, the vast majority of which, can be found with patience, although only a few dedicated specialists strive to collect this date by die varieties.
Availability: Both circulated and Mint State pieces are easily obtainable, with the majority of pieces found today in the mid circulated grades. Uncirculated pieces are scarce, and in MS-65 or finer, the issue is considered somewhat rare. All Proofs are exceedingly rare, and virtually unobtainable.
