The 1853-O $20 double eagle is the first in a series of hard-to-find double eagles from the New Orleans Mint. Most coins fall into the lower graded categories. The strike quality is usually light at the center of the obverse and reverse and most coins show a prooflike surface due in part to the routine die polishing. This issue is very scarce in an absolute sense, though Very Fine and Extremely Fine examples are available with persistence. Fewer than 100 coins are thought to survive in About Uncirculated condition, and in Mint State fewer than 10 different examples are known.
