History, Information, and Value of 1860 Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1860 $20 Gold Coin
Strike quality for the 1860 $20 double eagle is varied, but generally above average and well detailed. The complexion is usually lustrous and satiny, with rich original coloration. Die cracks are not unusual, particularly on the reverse. Circulated pieces are readily available in all grades, with only About Uncirculated and finer coins garnering a noteworthy premium above the price of bullion. At least 100 of these Philadelphia mint coins exist in Mint State, including 43 examples salvaged from the wreck of the SS Republic. Of the 59 Proof coins struck, just about a dozen or so can be accounted for today, with one each in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the ANA, and the ANS.
