History, Information, and Value of 1876-CC Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1876-CC $20 Double Eagle

The typical 1876-CC double eagle is softly defined over Liberty’s hair curls and many of the obverse star centrils, although the reverse is usually better produced and uniformly bold throughout. This date and mintmark is challenging to locate with relatively smooth surfaces as the vast majority of survivors are moderately to heavily abraded. Luster for this issue ranges from satiny to semi-prooflike. As one of the two most plentiful Carson City Mint double eagles of this type, the 1876-CC is a perennial favorite among collectors seeking an example from this fabled frontier coinage facility. Fortunately, this issue is relatively plentiful in circulated grades, and even in lower Mint State grades through MS-62 persistent and adequately funded buyers should have little difficulty obtaining an example. Choice Uncirculated coins are very rare, however, and the 1876-CC is unknown any finer than MS-64.
