History, Information, and Value of 1878-CC Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1878-CC $20 Double Eagle

A well produced issue, the 1878-CC double eagle typically comes with a sharp strike and, in high grades, pleasing frosty or satiny luster. Most survivors are moderately to heavily abraded. The 1878-CC is one of the rarest Type 3 Liberty Head double eagles from the Carson City Mint. This issue was once highly elusive in finer circulated grades such as EF and AU, but it is now only scarce at such levels thanks to the dispersal beginning in 1993 of two hoards. The 1878-CC remains rare in Choice AU-55 and AU-58, and it is extremely rare in Mint State with only a handful of examples certified MS-60 through MS-62+.
