This is a generally well struck issue, although a few pieces are a bit softly defined over one or more of the obverse stars. In high grades the 1880 double eagle is lustrous with either a frosty or prooflike finish. Most are heavily abraded, often with numerous deep marks. Once considered very scarce, the 1880 has become relatively obtainable in the VF to AU grade range thanks to the importation of significant numbers of circulated examples from European hoards. Mint State survivors remain elusive, and most grade MS-60 or MS-61. The finest certified examples grade MS-63. In Proof format this is rare double eagle with no more than a dozen coins believed extant from a mintage of just 36 pieces.
