History, Information, and Value of 1880 Coiled Flowing Hair $4 Gold
Value of 1880 Coiled Hair $4 Stella
All known examples were struck on shaved half eagle planchets, resulting in light striations that, in turn, obscured the finer details of the central high points. Most specimens are Choice or Gem with either a uniformly reflective or appreciably cameo finish.
The 1880 Coiled Hair Stella is the rarest four-dollar gold Stella, just barely edging out the 1879 Coiled Hair for this distinction. Fewer than a dozen specimens are known, probably only eight to ten coins; the inclusion of one signifies a prominent numismatic collection. While a couple of specimens are slightly impaired, the majority of coins that have been submitted to PCGS or NGC for third-party certification have been graded Proof-64 or finer. A specimen certified Proof-67 Cameo by NGC sold for $2,574,000 at auction in 2013.
