History, Information, and Value of 1881 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1881-S Morgan silver dollar is the most available of the 1878 to 1904 varieties in Mint State. It is likely that half of the original mintage_6,000,000 or more coins_remain in grades MS-60 upward. The 1881-S is an ideal coin to add to a set to illustrate the Morgan dollar design. Strike is usually very sharp on all points and, in general, the San Francisco Mint deserves high marks for quality. Coins typically have a satiny, often prooflike, luster; but keep in mind that no true proofs were actually produced.
Circulated 1881-S $1 Coins Are Valued In-line With Silver: Available in all grades from Fine to AU though the lesser grades often wind up in melting pots when the price of silver increases dramatically.
Most Common MS Morgan Dollar: This is the single most available date in the series in Mint State, 1878 to 1904. It is estimated that perhaps as much as 50% of the original mintage still exists, giving today’s collectors the opportunity to literally pick from among millions of pieces to find the ideal coin.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1881.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; S.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
