History, Information, and Value of 1883 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar was produced in large quantities. The typical coin seen today is likely to have unsatisfactory luster and an unsatisfactory strike. Circulation strike quality ranges from quite flat at the center to a minority that offer needle sharp strikes. Luster ranges from medium frosty to dull and grainy. Some coins were made from worn-out dies past retirement age, and these show granularity and metal flow lines. Careful selection is advised. It is thought that perhaps a dozen New Orleans Proofs of the date were produced though a case could be made for a prooflike designation for those pieces. Rare and important to advanced Morgan dollar aficionados. A few examples of the date have been certified as “Proof” by the leading grading services.
Easy to Locate an 1883-O $1 Silver Morgan Due to Amount Produced: Always available in VF and EF with AU pieces a trifle more difficult to locate.
Mint State Examples are Easy to Get Ahold Of, But Select Carefully: There will be absolutely no problem finding a Mint State specimen, even MS-65 or finer. Look for a well-struck specimen with good luster-the opposite exists so pick carefully. A well-struck coin will be worth much more.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1883.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
