Value of 1884 $20 Double Eagle

Produced with great care as a Proof issue, the 1884 double eagle is fully struck with a bold, if not sharp cameo finish. Wispy hairlines and other signs of minor contact are the norm for most survivors. The 1884 is one of only three Proof-only issues in the Liberty Head double eagle series, and it is the rarest issue (Proofs and circulation strikes combined) of this type after only the 1861 Paquet Reverse. No more than 20 specimens are accounted for in numismatic circles, among which are a few Gems that have been certified Proof-65 or Proof-66 by PCGS and NGC. Examples of the Proof issues of this era are included in the cabinet of the American Numismatic Society and the National Numismatic Collection.
