History, Information, and Value of 1889 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1889 $20 Double Eagle

This carefully produced issue tends to show sharp to full striking detail and, in high grades, lustrous satin or frosty surfaces. Most survivors are noticeably abraded, some heavily so, and it is very challenging to locate an 1889 double eagle with a relatively smooth appearance. Although the limited mintage confirms the 1889 as one of the scarcer Type 3 Liberty Head double eagles from the San Francisco Mint, enough examples have been repatriated over the years that the 1889 can be obtained with ease in both circulated and lower Mint State grades through MS-62. Higher grade coins are rare, the finest certified a solitary MS-63+ at PCGS. A mintage of just 41 coins for the Proof 1889 represents a marked reduction from the previous two years, and only 12 to 15 specimens are believed to have survived.
