History, Information, and Value of 1891 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1891-O Morgan Silver Dollar

In terms of striking quality, the 1891-O Morgan Silver Dollar is the worst struck of all Morgan dollars. Nearly all specimens show weakness in one area or another and some show flat centers. Sharply struck coins do exist, however, and can be found. Luster ranges from satiny to grainy to dull. The coin also has the distinction of being the only issue in the Morgan series struck from silver obtained under three different pieces of legislation. No proofs were produced in the New Orleans mint.
This 1891-O $1 Silver Coin is Common and Easy to Locate: Generally available in all grades for those who desire such coins.
Look Hard for the Higher Grades to Improve Your UNC Collection: All grades up to MS-65 are well represented in the numismatic marketplace, and higher grades are seen on occasion. Finding a well-struck 1891-O is nearly equal to finding that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but unlike the pot of gold, a sharply struck 1891-O may come your way after a long and diligent search. This coin will prove to be worth your time.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1891.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
