Value of 1894 $20 Double Eagle

Produced to a high standard of quality and represented by numerous examples in todays market, the 1894 double eagle is easily obtained with a sharp strike and vibrant mint luster. More challenging to locate are examples with minimally abraded surfaces as most are moderately to heavily marked. The 1894 double eagle is plentiful in all grades up to and including MS-63, with MS-64s scarcer yet still plentiful enough that the buyer should have little difficulty finding a suitable example. Coins grading MS-65 or finer, however, are rare. Despite a slightly lower mintage, the 1894 is not quite as rare as the 1893 in Proof format, although only two dozen or so pieces are extant in all grades.
