This high mintage issue varies in strike from full to somewhat soft around the border on one or both sides. Luster is not outstanding, although in high grades the typical 1899 double eagle presents well in this regard. Cherrypicking will be rewarded with a coin that is minimally abraded for the assigned grade. As with the 1898-S, the 1899 is plentiful in grades up to and including MS-64. At the MS-65 level it is remarkably scarce, however, and there are only a handful of MS-66s known to PCGS and NGC that rank as the finest certified. Rarer than many other Proof Liberty Head double eagles from the late 1890s and early 20th century, the 1899 has an extant population of only 30 to 40 coins in all grades.
