The typical example is overall sharply struck with just a few exceptions that display minor lack of detail to the obverse stars. Moderate to heavy abrasions are the norm, although high grade survivors have appealing luster in a satin, frosty or even prooflike finish. The 1900-S double eagle is scarce relative to the generous mintage, and also compared to the 1898-S and 1899-S. Even so, enough examples are extant that it is obtainable with ease in both worn condition and Uncirculated grades through MS-63. Near-Gems in MS-64 are scarce, while in Gem Mint State the 1900-S is rare and underrated. The finest certified examples have been certified MS-66 and MS-67 by NGC, with a single grading event listed at each level.
