This is a well struck issue that is also known for vibrant mint luster in higher grades. The typical survivors are abraded, some extensively so, particularly in circulated and lower Mint State grades. The 1901 is one of several low mintage Philadelphia Mint issues among 20th century Liberty Head double eagles. Even so, enough coins have been repatriated from overseas sources that the collector should have little difficult obtaining an example in grades up to and including MS-64. Even in MS-65 this issue is plentiful by the standards of the type. PCGS has graded a small number of MS-66s, the finest certified for the date. Rarer than the Proof 1900, the Proof 1901 double eagle has an extant population of just 40 to 50 coins from a mintage.
