Striking quality varies for this issue, as many survivors are boldly to sharply defined but others have incomplete detail to the obverse stars and the high points of Libertys portrait. The typical example is liberally abraded, and even in high grades the luster tends to be a bit subdued with a satin texture. The 1902 double eagle is the lowest mintage and rarest Liberty Head double eagle produced during the 20th century. Survivors are scarce to rare in all grades and most fall into the AU-55 to MS-62 range. Very scarce in MS-63 and rare any finer, the highest graded example is a PCGS MS-66. The Proof 1902 is similar in overall rarity to the Proof 1901 with only 40 to 50 survivors.
