History, Information, and Value of 1902 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1902-S Morgan Silver Dollar

Mint State grades of the 1902-S Morgan Silver Dollar are plentiful, but the strike quality varies. Most are lightly struck and some specimens have parallel die striations on Miss Liberty’s face. Finding an example with sharp strike will take some time. The luster of the 1902-S is typically satiny. The San Francisco mint did not produce any proofs of this coin.
May be Harder Than Most Coins to Find as a Circ: It will take some diligence to find an EF or AU but it can be done. Most collectors select Mint State coins for this issue.
Watch Out for Bad Strikes on This Coin: Always available at MS-60- to 63, though quality can play an important part in your choice. This issue is often seen with planchet striations across Liberty’s portrait from the planchet preparation stage. These should be avoided in favor of a well-struck and lustrous specimen, though neither of those qualities is a given for this date. MS-64 with the above positive attributes is the way to go for the 1902-S.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1902.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; S.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
