History, Information, and Value of 1908-D Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1908-D Indian Head $5 Gold

As with all Denver Mint issues in this series, the 1908-D Indian Half Eagle is well produced and typically displays sharp to full devices and a clearly defined mintmark. The luster is not as strong as on the 1908. Most Uncirculated survivors have extensively abraded surfaces that limit both the grade and eye appeal.

Readily obtainable in worn condition, the 1908-D is also fairly plentiful in lower Mint State grades through MS-63 thanks to the discovery of several small hoards beginning in the mid-20th century. Most hoard coins are heavily abraded. The 1908-D half eagle remains very scarce to rare in higher grades. The Virgil Brand hoard, handled by Manfra, Tordella & Brookes, did include a few exceptional pieces that are among the small number of 1908-D half eagles certified MS-64 or finer by the major third party grading services. There are only a handful of MS-65 coins known. One truly exceptional example has been certified MS-67 by PCGS.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.

The Indian Gold $5 coin is a collector favorite. These coins can be very difficult to grade since they are the only United States Mint coin to have a sunken in design rather than a raised design.
