History, Information, and Value of 1923-S Peace Dollar

Value of 1923 San Francisco Mint Peace Silver Dollar

The San Francisco Mint produced 19,020,000 1923-S Peace dollars _ a record for this issue. Similar to the 1922-S Peace dollar, 1923 San Francisco coins are typically softly struck. Many dollars were released into circulation but millions remained in storage until they were paid out in the 1940s and 1950s. Bagmarks are common and many coins have lackluster surfaces. Finding a coin that is well struck with a good luster and very few marks will prove a challenge, but will yield a great coin.
The Circulated Value Is The Silver Value: Always available if finding an EF or AU is your goal; the outlay of money is insignificant at these grades. These would just be bought as curiosity items or for silver in circulated grades.
Extremely High Grade 1923-S Peace Dollars Are Rare: A steady supply of MS-60 to MS-63 coins is available today, and higher grades such as MS-64 and MS-65 are also available to a patient collector with a strong budget. Above MS-65 the date is practically non-existent in the two major third-party grading companies’ holders. As always in the Peace dollar series, look for sharp details and satiny luster in any Mint State grade you choose. Sending especially high grade coins into an expert for further examination could be a wise decision.

The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1923.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace; S.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
