History, Information, and Value of 1928-S Peace Dollar

Value of 1928 San Francisco Mint Peace Silver Dollar

As with most previous S-Mint issues (1926-S being the exception), the 1928-S Peace dollar was poorly produced and is often seen weakly struck. Luster quality is usually good. This issue is available in MS-63 and MS-64. Find a rare MS-65 and it’s likely to cost 10 times more than coins at the lower grades. The 1928-S is the rarest date Peace dollar issue in Gem condition. This was the final year of issue of Peace dollars struck under the provisions of the 1918 Pittman Act.
1928-S Peace Dollars Are Still Common If Circulated: Readily available in EF and AU grades, but we advise you opt for Mint State.
Look For Details in High Grade 1928-S $1 Dollar Coins: All Mint State grades are available if you are patient, though many collectors steer clear of examples below MS-63. At MS-64 the date represents a good value†moderately expensive but still affordable to most collectors. MS-65 is about as fine as one can reasonably expect for this date†the two major third-party grading services have certified so few MS-66 examples that the combined total of the two firms can be counted on one hand with fingers left over! If you see a lustrous 1928-S with sharp details and good eye appeal, don’t hesitate to buy it!

The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1928.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace; S.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.

The Peace Dollar series is very popular among collectors.
