This is a generally well produced issue that is either boldly struck or with only minor softness of detail to the highest elements of the obverse portrait. In Mint State the 1894-S double eagle is typically highly lustrous with either a satin or frosty texture. Abrasions are prevalent on both worn and Uncirculated coins. Otherwise readily obtainable in all grades, the 1894-S is rare only in Gem Mint State with just a handful of MS-65s at the top of the certified population, one of which hails from the remarkable Saddle Ridge Hoard discovered in Northern California in 2013.
