1720 John Law Commemorative Medal

Value of 1720 John Law Medal

John Law, a promoter of questionable speculative enterprises in the Americans for the French, is negatively depicted in this medal. Obverse displays an image of Law wearing a cocked hat, embroidered coat, and the badge of St. Espirit. His right hand holds a stack of billets. Around his figure states, “Mons. de Laws, Count of Tanckerville, Adviser of the King in all his Counsels, Superintendent and Comptroller General of the Finances of the Kingdom of France.” Reverse is written, “Because the world wishes to be deceived it takes delight no longer in lotteries, and so purchases shares for tickets in all directions according to its present desire.”
