Value of 1779 General Anthony Wayne, Assault on Stony Point Medal

This American medal celebrated the American victory at Stony Point, New York and was presented to General Wayne who led the attack. Obverse features an Indian Queen holding a crown in her left and a laurel wreath in her right, which she is presenting to General Wayne. At her feet are an alligator and the shield of the United States. The legend reads, “The American Congress to Anthony Wayne, General of the Army.” The reverse legend states, “Stormy Point taken by storm” and in exergue the dates, July 15, 1779. The reverse image depicts an aerial view of the assault, which features the Hudson River, troops, the fort, and battery. Below the left is the artist’s name, Gattraeux.
