The Spanish gave this rare medal to the Indians as a symbol of good will and trade. Possibly, this medal was given to Huisconsin, a Mitasse chief of the Sauks and Foxes by the Spanish governor, Don Francisco Cruzat, but this has yet to be verified. Obverse depicts a bust of Charles III. The legend around his head reads, “Charles III, King of Spain and the Indies.” The reverse displays a wreath of cactus with the translation, “For Merit” in the center.
The obverse and reverse text read as follows: Carols III Rex De Espana E De Las Indias | and | Por Merito.
