<h3Value of 1890 U.S. Assay Commission Medal

This medal displays a left-facing bust of President Benjamin Harrison. The legend gives the President’s name and in the exergue states, “Mint of the United States Annual Assay, 1890.” The reverse displays a classically dressed woman teaching a child about scales. The legend translates, “The scales verify the weight (of the coins)”. Sources believe the reverse image depicts the greatest quality of an Assay medal ever produced. Twenty-five leather cases were purchased for these medals and distributed to the committee, while one velvet case was ordered, presumably for the President.
